Cedar Anderson, Director - Myassista
In today's society, it's crucial to create an environment where people are recognized as individuals, not just as diagnoses. This is
especially important for the Sandwich Generation, those caught between the Baby Boomers and Gen X, who juggle the responsibilities of
caring for aging parents while raising their own families.
The term "Sandwich Generation" describes families managing the support needs of aging parents while caring for their own children. In
Australia, many seniors choose to remain in their homes rather than move to residential aged care facilities. Residential aged care is
typically for individuals with significant care needs, usually around 80 years or older. Statistics show that once an individual moves into
a residential facility, their average lifespan diminishes to approximately 2.5 years.
Thousands of seniors prefer to stay in their homes, supported by family and friends. However, many struggle to access in-home supports due to a shortage of approved aged care home care providers. Eligible recipients often wait between 3 to 18 months to sign up with a provider. This situation places immense pressure on families, who must support their aging parents while also caring for their own children, effectively becoming the "meat in the sandwich."
Families face tough decisions, such as whether seniors should remain in a large family home with limited care or downsize to a smaller space where they can afford personal care. These decisions can impact the Sandwich Generation's inheritance, but there needs to be a balance. Should families spend the inheritance to provide a quality life for their loved ones in their twilight years, or wait on a provider waitlist, extending the period of being sandwiched between responsibilities?
Every decision is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. However, it's essential to consider all options and make informed choices that respect the hard work and wealth of the seniors.
Making decisions about the care and support of your loved ones can be challenging. At Myassista, we aim to understand the unique needs of
each family and are here to provide the support client’s need. We can assist in referring you to advocates and businesses who can make the
decision making process easier.
